Interview ECR-Vertreter*innen

Seit April vertreten Laura Armbruster und Craig Dent die CEPLAS Postdocs, sowie Laura Merx und Susanne Vollmer die Doktorand*innen. Wir haben ihnen einige Fragen zu ihren neuen Positionen gestellt.

Susanne Vollmer: PhD deputy representative

Question 1: What do you like about CEPLAS?

For me, what makes CEPLAS unique, is the strong connection between the universities and institutes. Besides the benefits of scientific knowledge transfer, I really enjoy the regular exchange with other PhDs and postdocs within CEPLAS.

Question 2: Why did you decide to represent the CEPLAS postdocs/ PhDs?

I think, being a representative offers a unique opportunity to better understand CEPLAS as a whole. However, I also see this position as a way to contribute my part to the great environment CEPLAS offers us.

Question 3: What issues would you like to address as deputy representative?

The fact that many different institutes belong to CEPLAS can be a big advantage for ECRs to find experts to collaborate. I aim to further increase the exchange between the difference locations, as well as to expand the workshops and activities on how to best prepare for the own next career level.

Laura Merx, PhD representative and joint representative of all Early Career Researchers (ECRs):

Question 1: What do you like about CEPLAS?

I highly appreciate the network in CEPLAS on a scientific and personal level. There is always somebody who can help you with your project but there is always somebody you can help, too. I love to see the fascination for science in all members of CEPLAS when talking about their projects.

Question 2: Why did you decide to represent the CEPLAS postdocs/ PhDs?

As long as I can remember I loved organizing events which make people happy. This is my goal for this year, too as we plan an ECR Retreat. Of course I like to support and help the ECRs with all of my knowledge. It is fun to actively engage in the network to improve CEPLAS every day.

Question 3: What issues would you like to address as representative?

As representative, I would like to create more networking opportunities for PhDs and Postdocs, as they are important for their projects and personal development. Moreover, I would like to emphasize topics like mental health and work-life balance in CEPLAS. I am very grateful for the support from the CEPLAS Equal Opportunity and Diversity Office regarding these topics.

Craig Dent, postdoc deputy representative:

Question 1: What do you like about CEPLAS?

I like being able to connect with plant scientists outside of my own institute/field .

Question 2: Why did you decide to represent the CEPLAS postdocs/ PhDs?

The CEPLAS ECR group made me feel welcome after arriving, and gave me some community. I want to pay that forward.

Question 3: What issues would you like to address as deputy representative?

I want to hear from you! If there is an issue that you think affects CEPLAS ECRs, you can reach me at: cdent@mpipz.mpg.de.

Question 2: Why did you decide to represent the CEPLAS postdocs/ PhDs?

When I first arrived in Cologne in January, I was a stranger in a new  city. However, thanks to my amazing colleagues and the welcoming and supportive CEPLAS community, I quickly began to feel at home here. Now that I've settled in, I am eager to give back by representing the interests of PhDs and PostDocs facing challenges and uncertainties.

Question 3: What issues would you like to address as representative?

As a representative of the ECRs at CEPLAS, my top priority is to contribute to an inclusive and supportive research environment for all. This involves actively welcoming new members to join our community and ensuring that everyone feels valued and respected. I'll celebrate successes but also address challenges, even if it means discussing areas for improvement.
