Fighting climate change with plants – science meets curiosity
Around 60 interested citizens and students gathered on July 7 at the Haus der Universität in Düsseldorf to learn how modern plant research can help address the climate crisis. Under the title “Green Heroes: Fighting Climate Change with Plants”, three researchers from CEPLAS and the Collaborative Research Centre TRR 341 shared fascinating insights into their work.
The presentations on topics such as plant genetic adaptation to climate change, innovative phenotyping techniques, and the use of artificial intelligence—sparked great interest and numerous questions from the audience.
The subsequent panel discussion, moderated by Nico Hoffmeister, was marked by lively debate, critical questions, and strong public engagement. Even after the official program ended, many participants continued their conversations over cold drinks in a relaxed atmosphere.
The evening clearly showed: Plant research offers promising approaches to building climate-resilient agriculture—and is attracting increasing interest from the public.
