EU Parliament adopts adjusted rules on new genomic techniques for plants
The European Parliament today approved the new regulatory framework for plants developed using new genomic techniques (NGTs), marking an important step towards fostering innovation in sustainable agriculture. With the new rules, regulatory decisions will increasingly be based on the final characteristics of a plant rather than the process by which it was developed.
The decision paves the way for the further implementation of modern plant breeding technologies across Europe.
We welcome this development as a significant milestone for plant science and research, helping to unlock innovative solutions for more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems.
“This decision is a major and long-awaited step forward for plant research in Europe", says Maria von Korff, speaker of CEPLAS. "It will significantly accelerate progress by allowing scientists to use modern genome-editing tools under a clear and supportive framework. It will help speed up the research and development of more resilient and sustainable crops, strengthening Europe’s research capacity and its environmental and agricultural goals.”
