On the recent "Doors Open with the Mouse" day, organized by WDR, 750 hosts across Germany opened their doors, inviting children and teenagers to embark on exciting discoveries. This year, under the theme "ZusammenTun (Acting together)," CEPLAS also participated in the event, offering a special program for 48 children aged 8 to 14.

Led by professor Ilka Axmann (Synthetic Microbiology) and PhD student Sabrina Egli (Cell and Interaction Biology), along with a team of scientists, the young participants had the unique opportunity to explore the invisible world of bacteria. During interactive experiments, they experienced firsthand how bacteria, as hidden allies, help support and keep plants healthy. Through microscopes, microbes were not only made visible but even illuminated, sparking great excitement among the children.

At the end of the day, the participants learned that bacteria are much more than just pathogens – they are essential helpers in nature. The event not only conveyed fascinating scientific facts but also highlighted the importance of teamwork and the vital connection between microorganisms and plants for the health of our ecosystem.
