As part of the lecture series “Wissenschaft im Kölner Rathaus”, organized by the “Kölner Wissenschaftsrunde", CEPLAS members Götz Hensel (HHU) and Susanne Vollmer (UoC) presented their work on the topic “Harnessing Molecular Scissors in Plants – Potential and Applications.”

After the deputy mayor of Cologne, Dr. Ralf Heinen, had welcomed the visitors, Götz Hensel introduced the audience to the scientific foundations of gene editing technologies, explaining the mechanisms behind molecular tools like CRISPR. Building on this, Susanne Vollmer provided insights into her current research, highlighting practical applications and recent developments.

The event drew an engaged audience of around 50 attendees who actively participated in the Q&A session. Their questions ranged from the applicability of these technologies in human and veterinary medicine to the legal frameworks currently governing gene editing.
