CEPLAS Women in Plant Sciences Day
“Work-Life-Integration”
Trainer: Dr. Iris Koall
This workshop starts with a theoretical input by Dr. Iris Koall, followed by a practical part on
- Analyze your energy, strengthen your capability and find an individual stance.
- Plan your resources (short and long term).
- Analyze your social network – are there inherited assumptions?
Participants will learn how to implement this into everyday life and how to handle the conflict between private needs and professional requirements.
Time: 9.00 – 11.30
“Mind full or mindful?!” – An Introduction to Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
Trainer: Katja Thomanek
The presenter will provide an overview of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction: What is mindfulness (and what it is not) and how it can be useful for you as a scientist and in your everyday life. Katja Thomanek will address: awareness enhancement (of oneself and others in the present moment), mindfulness in everyday life (at home and at work), coping strategies, and mindful communication. She will share theoretical principles based on the work of Prof. Jon Kabat-Zinn (University of Massachusetts Medical School) and brief experiential examples.
Time: 11.30 – 12.15
“Power Games of Men and Women in the scientific context”
Trainer: Dr. Peter Modler
If you feel that you are not yet respected by your colleagues: work more. If you see others making career who are not as capable as you: work harder. If nobody seems to notice your brilliance: double your workload. But never, never praise your own professional performance! Humility will be rewarded. The better arguments will prevail. Only wait long enough… very long.
Is this attitude a realistic description of many women in universities and science? Business consultant Peter Modler PhD regrets to have to confirm this impression. For more than 10 years he trains female leaders how to counter the power games of her male colleagues. He is author of several books (last one: “Die Manipulationsfalle”) and famous for his “Trainings of Arrogance®”.
Time: 13.30 – 15.30
„Authentic Networking for Women in Academia“
Trainer: Monère Renoir Wanner
Why is networking important? What are the foundational principles of authentic networking? Which action steps have proven effective?
Apart from performance and productivity, solid and authentic networking skills are essential in forging a successful career path. This impulse presentation will provide a basic overview of authentic networking for female scientists, create greater awareness of its importance, and give participants opportunities to take practical action steps.
Time: 16.00 – 17.00
Location: Insitute for Genetics, Cologne Biocenter, Zülpicher Str. 47a, lecture hall 4th floor
