Unravelling the functional relationship between leaf anatomy and photosynthesis by mutational and synthetic approaches.

A photosynthetically active bundle-sheath (BS) in the leaves is the hallmark of C4 photosynthesis. Identifying genes that affect BS ontogeny or general leaf anatomy/morphology towards C4-type in Arabidopsis allows to investigate, in a systematic fashion, how leaf anatomy is genetically encoded and how changes in its genetic architecture affect the photosynthetic performance of the leaf.
