Research focus

The evolution of C4 photosynthesis has led to an increase of carbon assimilation rates and plant growth compared to C3 photosynthetic plants. Photosynthesis is metabolically connected to nitrogen and sulfur assimilation pathways via cysteine biosynthesis making the metabolic and genetic coordination of these three pathways crucial for nutrient balance in plants. Despite this the molecular mechanisms underlying this coordination are so far poorly understood especially in C4 plants where differential spatial localization poses an additional challenge.
The aim of my project is to assess to what extent mineral nutrition is differently controlled in C3 and C4 plants and what role it plays in the evolution and optimal performance of the C4 photosynthetic mechanism.
