Research focus

Karl-Erich Jaeger serves as sub-coordinator of CEPLAS Research Area IV entitled “Secondary metabolites in plants: From biotic challenges towards synthetic biology”. Our main interest here is to establish biosynthetic plant pathways in microbial hosts. To this end, we have constructed several expression plasmids and gene transfer tools and have established different bacterial expression host strains including the photosynthetic purple bacterium Rhodobacter capsulatus and the plant pathogenic bacterium Burkholderia glumae. These molecular genetic tools enable us to clone and express plant-derived single genes and entire biosynthetic pathways thereby constructing “synthetic microorganisms” which will hopefully enable the synthesis of novel compounds and may lead to developing novel biotechnological routes to pharmaceutical products.
