Research Focus

Vasculature (leaf veins) provides water and minerals to leaf cells, and exports photosynthate to other parts of plants. Architectures of vasculature seem to be correlated with particular leaf shapes and sizes. However why certain vasculature architectures in leaves have evolved and whether these architectures can be further optimized are not clear. To address these questions, we will combine modelling and synthetic biology approaches to create synthetic leaves with defined vasculature architectures, and assess their physiological properties.
