Research focus

C4 photosynthesis is a trait that occurred over 60 times independently in several plant lineages. Since it is more efficient in water and nitrogen use than C3 photosynthesis, multiple attempts have been made to engineer the complex trait into crop plants. We are elucidating evolutionary routes that led to a so-called C3-C4 intermediate trait in Brassicaceae species. We want to understand this special trait and attempt to engineer it into model plant species.
