Research focus

Past research demonstrated that Papain-like cysteine proteases (PLCPs) are essential hubs in plant immunity. Little is known about the roles of PLCPs in microbial interactions of the plant root. Recently, root-specific PLCPs were discovered in Zea mays, which are activated by the plant hormone salicylic acid, which plays an important role in the activation of immune responses. In my PhD project I will characterize maize root PLCPs and their roles in the interactions with the soil microbiota.
