Successful CEPLAS Women in Plant Sciences Day 2017!

20/07/2017

21 female CEPLAS scientists participated in a compact, interactive and women-oriented workshop programme.

This year’s CEPLAS Women in Plant Sciences Day was a complete success! 21 female CEPLAS scientists and four experienced trainers from different professional disciplines came together on July 12, 2017 at the University of Cologne. The intention of this meeting was to provide the female CEPLAS scientists a compact, interactive and women-oriented workshop programme in an informal atmosphere. In the three workshops the participants learned about strategies and skills for successful personal branding, negotiations and spontaneous speaking and could directly practice them in exercises. The CEPLAS Women in Plant Sciences Day is also a platform for female CEPLAS scientists to meet each other and to exchange.

The event started with the workshop “Branding for Female CHAMPS” by Farah Coppola and Richard van der Put (Mind Elevators, Amsterdam, The Netherlands). The trainers introduced a 4-steps-strategy to successful personal branding that was applied in a practical exercise afterwards.

Dr. Sabine Küsters lead the second workshop module on “Negotiation for Women – Between Empathy and Assertiveness”. She gave insights into the theory of negotiation focusing on the BATNA approach. In a role play the participants slipped into a fictitious negotiation situation in the role of either an employer or an employee.

The focus of the last workshop “Quick on Your Feet! – Spontaneous Speaking Practice for Women Scientists” laid on spontaneous verbal communication strategies in professional contexts. The trainer, Julie Stearns, guided the participants to develop an own verbal business card.

In the breaks between the workshops the participants had a good opportunity to exchange with the trainers and their CEPLAS colleagues. Based on the first feedback all participants were able to benefit from the event for themselves and their career. The participants and trainers enjoyed the CEPLAS Women in Plant Sciences Day 2017 and the opportunity to discuss in a comfortable, informal environment.
